The region between the Gorges de l’Aveyron, the ‘Grand Causses and Albi is properly the most wonderful parts of France.
It offers lots of culture discoveries and walking tracks. At the time of the crusades against the Cathars (1209), until the French- English 100 year war (1337-1453), they’ve build in this whole area between the Aveyron and the Tarn, more then 200 small medieval villages. (Villeneuves)
The village nearby a castle is called a Castelnau and if it’s build nearby a Monastery it’s called a Bastide.
After the 13e century the name Bastide has been a common name. This ‘Bastides’ normally were build around a square with special futures as arches and stone walls. The have a rich military history and a civil architecture.
Mostly the are situated in a landscaped area with winery’s and dovecote’s.
The GR46 and GR36 connect these medieval villages and cities, the most beautiful in France in the middle of this various landscape.
These villages, called Bastides are called Bastides Albigoeoises, and were often build on cliffs and hill tops against the enemies.
The GR46 and GR36 will bring you through small hidden tracks and you will discover the amazing beauty of the Aveyron and the Grands Causses.
Also you will pass the Forêt de Grésigne, one of the largest oak forests in the south of France.
